Area terrain?

by Crushar » January 12th, 2013, 7:03 pm

All right. We all know that there are several rules questions that have never been fully answered by the FAQ's or CB. I figured that we should revisit some of these things, if for no other reason then to see if we can't agree on common ground on how to handle these situation.

So today let's talk about "Area Terrain"

Area terrain- I think and use it like this- a piece of green felt with a tree on it, then call it a stand of trees. Not only is it pleasing to the eye but it serves a wonderful purpose of really adding some terrain and line of sight blocking.

See an example here:
Image

Rules:
Here's how I like to play them- I like to play them as Zero Visibility Zones unless you are on the edge of the felt. If you are then you can shoot out but also be shot at, you will receive cover bonus of -3 to be hit and +3 for armor. Also it is difficult terrain, you have to have Jungle terrain to move at regular speed through them.

Any problems with this?

How do you measure the edge? The mini base touching the edge? Or x number of cm in from the edge?

Mini must physically be on the edge.

we used to use areas like that as low vis without the cover bonus unless the terrain piece had obvious features that actually covered the mini at least partially.
But i like the idea since it allows you to block los even more and lets be honest its an quick and easy, affordable terrain piece.
I like it
I do have a question tho have you found any problems in your games by using it like this?

Actually no. So far there hasn't been any problems.

Doing it this way had the effect of making a VERY CHEAP boarding action table! Chain rifles became awesome and expensive troops had to use tactics instead of "tricks."

Evil Mushroom Games

http://www.evilmushroomgames.com/shop/

Price was right (about $20 US) but he isn't making them anymore. I wish I could have just two more! They are made of spray foam. Very light weight and actually I was surprised by how much detail was actually on it when I saw what it was made of. I mean it's not Warmill, MAS, or Sarrisa. But it ain't all bad either!

Perhaps you can convince him, he's on your island!

Yeah, there are. :(

Notably MSV2-3, Sixth Sense 2, cheap template troops and CC troops.

MSV models will happily ignore oll the BS modifiers, ARO against models that were walking past the other side of the woodland, get 'first strike' effects when shooting through with no penalties etc.

Sixth Sense 2 models will ARO to any and all attacks (including CC Attacks, laying Mines etc.) in or beyond the woodland with no ZVZ penalties.

CC Troops will be untouchable unless you have an MSV, direct template weapon or use Suppression Fire, you can't even shoot them when they charge you.

Cheap direct template weapon models like Naffatun and Galwegians will cause havoc with their large teardrop Intuitive Attacks.

So the basic version this problem is this:

Shooting through jungle bases is total cover and can't happen.
Models in jungles are in low vis and can be shot as normal, to balance MSV, give them cover too.
Models in btb with the terrain pieces get cover.

Your more exhausted and researched method is this:
Summary

* Shooting out from the edge = LVZ
* Shooting at a target on the edge = LVZ + cover
* Shooting within ZoC = LVZ + cover
* Outside ZoC, one area = ZVS + cover
* Outside ZoC, through two areas = total cover

I like your method but it is complex. I think we'll end up with the basic version!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction and doing loads of work on this.

This is exactly how we do it, except that you have to be at least partially in the woods to claim cover and the whole area is difficult/ very difficult terrain. Also we give the models inside the jungle a penalty from the lvz for shooting out as well.
