How to play with a link team

by LordOfDarkness » May 10th, 2016, 9:58 am

Hey everyone. I play infinity for more less 3 months. Most of that time i played :nomad: , but recently i have played with a link team on bakunin. Once i used moiras link and once riot grrls one (tournament with limit for just one combat group). Also i want to start :tohaa: army, but here's the thing: i have no idea how to use link to be effective. When i played moiras, they had long range weapons, so i have putted them on a roof of a building, stayed there the whole game and was firing the increased bs and b from my hmg and multi sniper rifle. But when i used riot grrl link, i had no idea how to use it. I had to move 5 models, because its an offencive link, on a limited space and expose myself to aro's from 3 snipers. That makes me wondering how to use the link effectively, because tohaa have that triads, so i have to learn playing with links to be able to be good with the tohaa.

Using offensive link teams is the same as offensive use of single models. You still need to advance under cover to keep your opponent from AROing you, unless (or at least untill) you are ready to engage him with your Team Leader's gun. So, you need to use either terrain or Smoke screens for cover.

Of course, here comes the question whether you have enough terrain on your table for that. But since you haven't mentioned it, I can't address this issue (still, if there's no way of moving without provoking ARO from 3 snipers, I'd suspect there's not enough terrain on the table).

Also, keep in mind that Link Teams aren't the end-all, be-all in Infinity. It is still worth to have a sniper of your own to find himself a position and elliminate enemy snipers one by one. Use a Camo Infiltrator to open the way for you. Drop an airlanding model behind enemy lines and dismantle them, so your Link can move forward.

With Tohaa, you'll get access to Tohaa Triad Teams, which are kinda unique: you can't get bonuses above Burst +1 and Order efficiency, true, but you can have multiple triads and - which is kinda important - mix'n'match various Linkable troops into the same fireteam. So, have a heavy hitter for offensive firepower, a warband to screen the team with Smoke when needed (and make it damn risky for oyur opponent to come close) and a specialist (like a Kamael Paramedic) to use on objectives, and have a Medkit handy in case someone gets wounded.

There was enought terrain, problem is, my opponent won wip roll and choosed side with very hight tower, and decided that i will deploy first. SO i deployed my riot grrls where they could take cover, unfotrunately thn he putted his link of snipers with msv l2 on that tower so he could se almost everything on the battlefield, including all objectives.

Then it's a problem with terrain setup - while there should be good sniper nests on the table, none of them should be such a sweet spot. But if so, good answer to such snipers is to get as close as possible and engage with a high burst weapon - Spitfire or HMG - from their +3 range. Snipers don't like that.

You can either make your link teams specialised - sniper on a roof and for rifles in the building for a defensive team (your Moiras count too!), assault weapons with some warm bodies behind it (Myrmidon Spitfire + backup, Riot Grrls for a heavier example), or you can make a diverse fireteam, with weapons for each range bracket.

Tohaa are good with either approach, but since they won't be getting bonuses for 4- and 5-man fireteam you have to rely on increased burst and mobility Triads give you. If you're making an assault fireteam each model in it should be one that you want to bring closer to the enemy - Spitfire, Viral Rifle and flamethrower for example. When your active model dies you're already closer to enemy with the other two. Conversely, your defensive fireteams should be probably more specialized, a sniper or two backed up with a Kamael Combi, to keep costs down.

Tohaa are also a bit less exposed to the usual threats to fireteams - less models in link means less chance for a template to cover 2+ of them.
I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but shouldn't we just take the warning labels off everything and let the problem deal with itself?

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... 426&type=3 there are the photos form the tournament, so you can take a look of the tables. That last game with sniper spot is the table with plane (only one with on a gaming mat). So i suppose to get better with ofencive using the links i need to practise. A lot.

Then there wasn't enough of the right terrain. That being said, I'm learning Tohaa now (half way through an escalation league). One of the big advantages of Tohaa are the Makaul. Have one throw two Zero-V (soon to be Eclipse) smoke grenades (Grenades count as BS so they get the +1 Burst from the link) to cover your advance. Even with MSV L2 you can't see through Zero-V Smoke.

OP is playing Bakunin, which has some difficulty dealing with MSV2 links since a lot of their advantages are nullified by the MSV2: Zeroes, Prowlers, Morlocks and the various Reverends. There are 2 hard counters you brought in your lists OP one is the Uberfallkommandos and the other is the Reverand Custodier's White Noise Zone. I don't know if you tried using the Hacker+ to protect your link as it moved up.

Running MSV2 fire teams against certain armies that lean heavily on Camo/ODD or smoke can shut those armies down hard, especially if that army's troubleshooter/spot removal profiles rely on those things, like the HMG Moira.

You can spread the MSV2 link to cover a good chunk of the table on deployment if the Link Leader is situated well. ZoC is potentially a 16+ in. tall cylinder with a 16+ in. diameter, allowing the fire team to spread out across multiple rooftops/alleyways and doubling up on potential trouble spots. The down side is MSV2 fireteams are expensive, 1 W except for the Hsien, very weak against White Noise and don't want to give up their position to score obj.
