chain rifles to cheap

by mouzerius » April 9th, 2013, 9:28 pm

after plaing against a ariadna army with a heavy load of chain rifles and a lot more figures than

my yu jing starter set (which i wanted to try) and getting whiped by them.

i wonder, looking at the cost of a model with one against my own basic shanshi soldiers wit a combi rifle

and what they can do on the battlefield, i get a bit the feeling that they are way to cheap.

1. no need to make a hit roll

2 B1 but if you put the marker right the virtual B can go balistic.

3 did i say its way way cheaper than a basic unit with a rifle.

whats your thought about it.

Chain rifles can be deadly but if you don't get in range to use them then they can also be useless. The advantage the guy with the rifle is he can shoot from much further away and if the model with chain rifle is not within template range he can do nothing but try to dodge. A rifle is more because it is more versatile.

The Rifleman can use Vantage Points better than any Chain Rifle.

aand without rolling dices, you can't roll crits ;)

chain rifles are great, but are also a short range suicide weapon . . while combis, when correctly used, are more effective against a wider range of targets (and situations)

If you`re playing on a corridor table, chain rifles are brutal. Normal tables, they typocally require some finese to get nto range.
There is ne advantagebof deploying second, see where all yhe imoetuous lanes and movememt lanes for the chain rifles, deploy to pock off in reactions

Saw a game the other day where a guy with a chain rifle was pinned, prone behind some barricades by just a couple of line infantry with rifles, and just couldn't risk standing up. So I guess it varies very much depending on the situation! :)

I have really come to HATE Kuang Shi. They are so cheap for how brutal they are, and the Celestial Guard controlling them is hard to get to. I've had a few bad experiences with them, although I should say it's probably due to my guys being too close together and my general newbieness at facing people properly to cover fire lanes. Plus, corridor tables really do seem to be their best stomping ground.

Chain Rifles fit well with the fluff/background they are virtually always given to models that are either Impetuous or Irregular sometimes both and they have being in the game from the very first rules. No way are they under costed or over powered.

If you want to take an force built on countless Caledonian Volunteers with their 6 point Chain Rifle or any other equivalent LI with a chain rifle I'll quite happily wipe out all your little Lemmings with a normal list of any type. Because its going to be a one trick pony and suffer the same issues as all lists built only to do one thing well. 90% of the weapons in the game will be able to out range your and potentially cause more damage. Also the troops 'generally' fielding chain rifles are not good at CC so the fall short if engaged in CC by a specialist. They don't get SSL1, SSL2, MSV of any kind and virtually never have MA of any level see previous statement 'generally' no good at CC.

So shoot them, drop smoke on em, shoot them, drop smoke on them, punch them in the face, use indirect template weapons, use mines, shoot them, did I mention shooting them and if that doesn't work set them on fire!

To put it another way if your getting bested by the cheapest troops with the cheapest weapon in the game then sorry its not your opponent or his lists that's failing you.

The other reason why chain-rifles are so cheap is because they don't give you any way of defending yourself. With a normal gun you have the chance to negate your opponents shots. With a chain-rifle you get to hit automatically but the other person gets a normal roll so you'll seldom do better than trade models.

And to echo some others' remarks if your terrain is really dense chain-rifles do become better than their points dictate. Unless you're going for a really brutal boarding scenario models with rifles should usually get the chance for a free shot at chain-rifle mooks unless they waste orders dropping smoke and moving around firelanes.
