Learning to write lists for ITS 300 pts

So now that I feel that I've learned most of the basics about the game, I'm trying to make lists for ITS and trying to balance the whole specialists vs. firepower thing. However most of my lists are 10 to 12 dudes and I'm seeing online that people bring lists with 14-18 orders sometimes with extra impetuos or links...should I be aiming for a higher order count?

It explains a lot better than I can about specialists and such and finding that sort of balance.
