BoB: Grime and Neonlight - Ideas and concept

by Fenrir » July 22nd, 2015, 1:35 pm

Hi there,

I'm going to build a gaming board! (As if the placement of this thread did not make it blatantly obvious :v: )

I am planning to go for a dark, urban, cyberpunk-style with lots of lasered Acrylics as Neonlights and graffitti to add color. Maybe even LED lights in certain buildings.

My inspirations are:
-Ghost in the Shell (manga and original movie)
-Psycho Pass (especially the first Episode)
-Mass Effect: the Afterlife Club, Omega in general and the strip on the Citadel
-the Infinity artwork with the girl asking for contact info (probably my favourite artwork)

I'm not sure if the board is going to be fully or partly modular. One is more interesting for gaming, the other is more interesting/easier to build. I could also do one side more high tech and the other more slum like. Will have to give that more thought.

Immediate things to do:
-acquire a board as base to build on (not yet decided between chipboard or HDF)
-get more mdf terrain (currently two LJ Snack Bars and Microart Apartment 3 Pack)
-finish painting my Laughing Jack Snack Bars to get a feel for the colors (Army Painter Uniform Grey is a bit light)

Will post pictures of the Snack Bar later today or tomorrow, depending on how motivated I am.
It does not matter if you win by an inch or by a mile. But the former is usually more fun.

Make sure to watch/play as much as possible of Syndicate Wars and Satellite Rain for the inspiration.

Syndikats Wars ist the reason I play Infinity.(more or less  )
It had the movie Billboard with the trailer of Gits ( and judge dread) it made me watch my first Anime. Without it I might have never seen Ghost in the Shell. And Infinity definitely has its inspirations also from Gits. And my love for Infinity has its Seed planted in Gits!

I shall be watching with interest Fenrir. I too am going for the darker cyberpunk noir kind of table - though mine is a bit too far along to fit the campaign's 25% cutoff, sadly.

It's all well and good having bright clean sci-fi as a reaction to the grim dark horror of 40K, for example, but for me I want it a bit dark

Snack Bar done, will post photos once the sealant dries. Came out a little to light for what I wanted. MDF drinks inks in comparison to plastic.

Never played any Syndicate. I started late with video games. (My father wasn't convinced the Internet would stay around :| ) But since my birthday is coming up soon, I might gift myself Satellite Reign. For research purposes.

My introduction into cyberpunk was one of the Ghost in the Shell manga. Because it had a hot woman and a robot on the cover and I was a teenager. I became a fan almost instantly. The I encountered an article about a video game called Oni that was described as similiar to GitS and I bought it immediately on release and played through it in maybe two or three sittings. I've always hoped for a follow-up game. I even have sketched out a Yu Jing color scheme based on it.
I have, since then, been devouring everything cyberpunk I could get my hands on.

Yepp! Also, Snack Bar:

Not really happy with how it came out. Needs to be a bit darker. Glow around the door windows looks better, glow around the back window looks less stupid irl ;)

Short update, pics tomorrow.

I realised there was a hardware store within walking distance from my home (Thanks, google!) So lacking a car I walked over and came back with three wooden boards 120x40cm. An afternoon of fervent screwing (the sweaty, not the sweaty-fun kind) and a bit of sawing gave me my basic board to build on (and a blister on my palm, curse my lack of power tools). The wood actually looks quite nice, don't really know if I can bring myself to cover it in foamboard and plasticard.

And another building. This time the color is more to my linking. The Microarts garage and two more apartments are built and ready for painting. The actual table suffered from a miscalculation, so I don't have as much styrodur as I'm going to need. :3:

Yeah, sorry for the long wait. Apparently travelling for work takes time away from hobby time.

This was how the table looked for its first game. Which I won. By being an utterly sneaky git. :3:

Finally, though, more hexagon plasticcard and the grey paint for the main parts arrived. :D
