What is Infinity not doing?

by Z.inc » February 5th, 2013, 11:58 pm

What is Infinity not making that you would like to see? For example, civilians, dramatis personae, vehicles, local police? Maybe CB produces everything you need to play their officially released scenarios, but perhaps your imagination and gaming habits are larger than officially released scenarios.

A boardgame. I would love to see CB make an Infinity related board game.
Kind of how like FantasyFlightGames is expanding on the Android game to create a full universe of related games; Android, Infiltration and Netrunner (I know it's a relaunch of an old game, but its a fabulous game).

Hm... Novels, Art book(s), in-world books (a la Infantryman's Uplifting Primer), board game, card game (not collectible, not necessarily a deckbuilder), and perhaps display-level minis (e.g. 54mm Tomcat).

So it sounds like what everyone is saying is that CB should do with Infinity what GW did/does with WH/WH40k???

As if GW is the only company to have released additional products beyond their core line.

Oh, wait, Wizards of the Coast with MtG Novels; Privateer Press with non-mini games, RPG; TSR (then WotC) with D&D novels, games, movies; various video game companies with novels, movies, board games, toys, etc.

Well, de gustibus non est disputandum. :)

The original Dragonlance trilogy was pretty good, as was the Cleric Quintet and the first two Drizzt trilogies (Icewind Dale, Dark Elf). Various Starwars spin-offs have been as good, or better, than the movies. But yes, a lot of genre fiction blows giant donkey...

...something.

Personally, I love the Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogy books. Especially since I've been playing in a nearly year-long Dark Heresy game.

That's because they are actually written by good writers, not the donkey loving ones usually writing game fiction that Cervantes3773 mentioned above.

Oh goodness, yes! Dan Abnett is their best writer, followed by Graham McNeill and William King. I gave the first Eisenhorn book to a friend and he came back a day later asking for the rest.

And he's doing a new trilogy that centers around a Ravenor vs. Eisenhorn arc. First book came out in October.

CB does need to flesh out the Human Sphere with some novels or short story anthologies. That's a must IMO. When they do this they'll need to leave the donkey lovers out of it. Nothing downgrades a game faster than badly written game fiction.

Abnett takes a horrendous number of liberties with the 40K fluff - there are so many things he's written where the canon explanations for them are basically "Er... well, that's a special case". He introduces major contradictions with established fluff that would break entire parts of the setting, usually for the sake of trivialities and side plots - and then usually comes around to contradicting his own interpretation, even within the same series.

He is catastrophically overrated.

To actually contribute to the main subject, I'd love to have a concept art book, or at least access to good quality online copies of the concept art.

Good quality fiction would be nice too, as long as that aforementioned individual is not used as any kind of benchmark for "good quality".

Writing well and treating the fluff well are two distinct attributes.

He is their best writer, as in most pleasing prose, coherent story lines, believable characters, etc.
He does take liberties with the fluff and, as you say, some are pretty wild.

But if you think he handles the fluff poorly, please don't read C.S. Goto or Scanlon's treatment of the Heresy-era Dark Angels. Terrible to read and just.... out there.

Pariah also has a focus on Bequin... it's on my "to read" shelf (or about second in line).

Anyway, I think the Violent Intermission would make a good board game - Bakunin v. Aleph, you could incorporate some aspects of Dune/Rex type games, with politics (asking for help from other factions), troops movements, and betrayal (Aleph had infiltrators in Bakunin). The Red Auction would make a hilariously morbid economic-based game. "Hmmm... yes, I'll pay $500 to have him... eliminated."

True, but I do feel that separating the two is being somewhat semantic about the difference between what labelling someone the best Black Library writer strictly means and what it implies.
But if you think he handles the fluff poorly...
Oh, I know there are worse for maltreatment of the fluff. Abnett is however the one that usually gets my goat, mostly because his reputation amongst the community almost always overlooks that flaw in his work.

It's aggravating to see someone being lauded while they're also running roughshod over parts of the setting.

Fair enough. Consider then that I enjoy reading Abnett's non-40k/Fantasy work... and can't say the same for other BL writers.

Again, onto the main topic:
I think a lot of the Infinity fluff events provide big opportunities for boardgames. Antipode Wars, Commercial Conflicts, Aristeia!, YJ's oppressive political climate in which you compete with other subversives to see who can survive the longest... :D

What Infinity isn't doing and I'd like:
- concept art gallery, including unreleased models, for conversions and sculpting
- artbook, especially from the artists illustrating the first 2 books
- the Exrah sectorial :P
- sane/consistent weapon size policy
- good-looking Wildcats
- updated and bug-free DT army builder

I'd like an RPG. That would be fun. I hope and pray that we don't have to have a Blood-Bowl-esque game (Grind, DreadBall, etc) or a LCG/CCG/CMG thing. It's tired. If CB can make a minis game of the calibre of Infinity, they can come up with something original in the way of off-shoots.

Don't forget Aristeia!!

I'm ok with a sports game, provided it's not be a carbon copy of the other existing ones (BB, Grind, DB, etc). I doubt we'll see an LCG-esque game - that requires a lot more work than I think they would want to put into it. Maybe a Race for the Galaxy-esque game; card-based, but not deck-dependent.

I'd like to see an Infinity art book one day as well as a compilation of short stories. Nothing extravagant, really, just enough to satisfy players and attracting new ones. Back in the day, Battletech had a slim paperback book filled with short stories and artwork that got me into the game.

Although it sounds negative, I have so far not read any established-universe fiction book I would consider good after I reached adulthood. I have read some that just gets off the ground as ok pulp, and a lot of books that...might have done far better being sold as sanitary product.

I know I sound negative, but man there is a lot of bad writing out there in Black Library/D&D/Star Wars EU-land, and painfully little worth reading. I do not have high hopes for PP's new line either. There are serious problems tied to writing in "owned worlds":
