Forgive me Brethren, for I have sinned

by TallonHunteR » August 18th, 2013, 7:49 am

My local gaming group plays Hormachine, and lots of it. There is some Blood Bowl, and peeps sometimes come down to play 40k tournaments (if 4 people can be considered a tournament), and two others have infinity armies but rarely play and one who possesses the requisite minis but doesn't play at all (I'm in the process for negotiating for his YJ)

So I thought I'd check out how the other side lived. sold my SPHEESS MAHREENS which were taking up space in a case and bought a Retribution battle box. Started getting in to it, really into it. I even theory crafted a list. With swappable options.

And then a shady box of PP models made a grab for my wallet. As luck would have it, i possessed SS2 and smited the grubby bastards with an ARO.

NEVER AGAIN SHALL I PAY MORE THAN $150 CDN FOR A TOURNEY VIABLE ARMY LIST. that...shit...would have cost me at least $225 to make a 25 point army, most hormachine tourneys run 50 pts, 2 lists.

I prostrate my self before you brethren of the CB creed. I am humbled and beg thy forgiveness for my transgression.

Nay, brother! You remained strong in the face of temptation. You do not need absolution, for you have not sinned.

Be at peace. Go and sin no more! Even though thou didn'st-t.

Privateer Press used to have a vice grip on my wallet; it was the only game I needed. Then, a combination of nausea from lurking the forums and some of their more recent business decisions drove me off. Infinity has always had my eye, and my wife was really interested in smaller scale games with less line troopers to paint. We've been hooked ever since.

Oh, it wasn't anything so dramatic. And I saw their reasoning and all, business wise... but mostly, the Convergence of Cyriss entire line being available at Lock and Load, but everyone having to wait months for it to be release piece meal otherwise. I know this drums up sales and such, but really all my problems have arisen from Convergence of Cyriss. Specifically, they get a focus mechanic that I think everyone should have; I bought this game for Steam powered robots, but I can't field more than a pair(depending on caster) cause focus starvation. Their Kickstarter 'exclusive cards'(for their CCG that I was psyched for) and ridiculously over priced add-ons($500 art print, I seem to remember; $10 PDF Map tile) didn't help my attitude.

I dunno, it all just rubbed me the wrong way. I still play Warmahordes(friendly games), I just don't buy anything new anymore.

Also, sorry for thread hijack.

Brother, I feel your pain! For this very day, I sold the last remaining Trollkin (I kept the Kiltlifter and the custom-sculpted pimp troll that Olaf made for me). $560 retail counting the hardcase, and it was not really a fieldable army! (too many beasts)

To quote Ruth from 'Hell on Wheels' on Saturday's episode: He who hates his sin, can still be redeemed, even if he cannot turn away from it. I bet our religious friends from Bakunin might agree. Though they might be a little to happy to do the redeeming part.

My $1000 worth of Skaven shall depart this household come Sunday, though for less than half of what I paid.

So... time to get some more terrain, and maybe pick up a second faction starter! My wife likes the Highlanders and Dog Warriors... maybe I can entice her to play, as she never really got into 40k (despite buying a Space Wolves battleforce).

Is it wrong I am going to paint McMurrough like our Corgi? The Studio Giráldez rendition isn't too far off!

In their defense, Kickstarter is not a store nor is it intended to be a means to procure pre-orders. It's a funding mechanism, which can offer rewards which might not otherwise be available. Originally Kickstarters weren't about pre-ordering a product at a discount, but were about contributing financially to help a project come to fruition. The rewards were more like thank-you gifts. Often if it resulted in a product like a game, the actual item was close to the same price as retail.

Indeed. There is not a gaming commandment "thou shalt hast no games before me".

Multiple are the games that can be followed and played. Often alongside the bigger ones. I've long been a two-game systems-at-a-time gamer, and have not been struck down yet. Maybe it's because Zeus is getting blind in his dotage and can't hit the side of a mountain anymore. :D

I have long been a player of Warhammer Fantasy, though these days I am tempted more and more to liquidate my forces, which suffer greatly from edition lag.

I have also been bitten horribly by the nostalgia bug of kickstarter, I picked up Mutant Chronicles and Robotech.

In addition I have Wild West Exodus coming, and have a sizable collection of Heavy Gear Blitz. As well as being an avid board-gamer. As well as a fan of one or two ccg's, thankfully my favored CCG's are OOP, so it doesn't impact on further investment in my current games.

These is no Sin in enjoying another game as long as you enjoy what you are playing at the time. I have found in the past that I can get burned out on a game, and having some variety allows you to not burn out completely.

I hear you brother, for I have sinned to. 60 days ago I bought the MKII book and Trollblood army book. Fortunately my wife reminded how I used to hate warmahordes... Reality check!

I play PulP City or Freebooter's Fate when I have a need for something different.

I get that, really, but exclusive models/cards(stat wise, not alternative art or sculpts) for your competitive game is a big no-no for me. The Kickstarter turned into a giant store in the end, with several 'secret' stretch goals unlocking the option to buy more pdfs at about retail. I went from an $80 pledge(Game, two extra journeyman warcasters) to $0. I guess I'm just spoiled by the Reaper Kickstarter.

Polygamery is a risky thing. It starts so innocent, it harms no one, I'm just broadening my horizons you say, it's all to improve my tactics and be a better player, and then one day your TO finds someone's house rule penciled on a margin of your army list and your established gaming life gets ruined. Remember, do not lie to your friends more than the mechanics allow, and remember that when you play with someone new for the first time, you never know what you may catch - take a hacker, better safe than sorry

I'm currently DOWN to two games: Infinity and Ambush Alley (or some variation on the Ambush Alley theme). Flames of War is taking a long break, probably until v4.

I have enough Colonial-Brit artillery to flatten several Afghan towns, not to mention gun down rows and rows of screaming hill tribes. And I haven't even gotten into some of the really fun stuff lurking in various dark recesses, like the OGRE kickstarter or the Robotech one.

*throws up a little*

Axis v Allies? Fighting Fantasy? AS IF. Puh-leeeeze! I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. Or a blank Czech. :D
Firstly, because WW2 holds NO allure to me (in whatever scale), and secondly, because the great majority of those FF books were fantasy (IE full of dragons and shite like that) and that stuff don't float chromey's boat, either.

I've been a follower of poly-game-y for over 27 years, and will be one until I die. Life is too short to tie yourself down to one company and let them dictate your choices. No matter how awesome the game might be. I will flit from game to game as I go. I started my SF with battletech and infinity will NOT be my last SF game that I play.

Now, pish-tosh this talk of gaming heresy. Next thing you'll be calling me a heretic because I don't fawn at the feet of the grating Whedon - or dig on lycra-clad lame-o superheroes*.

I wish I could get into poly-gamey more, but my wife is my only opponent, and she's not nearly as obsessed with the gaming side of the hobby. She enjoys it well enough, but would rather paint than learn a new rules system. The only popular games around here are Magic and Warmachine, though that's a 45 minute drive.
