Using "The Department" for Infinity missions?

by Section9 » August 1st, 2013, 4:59 am

"The Department" is a film-noir scifi investigation and skirmish game.

Yes, I said investigation. So there are some missions where you are either questioning folks on the street or arresting them to interrogate back at the station. And there are other missions where you're doing a full-on SWAT assault.

I think it would make a great subgame for Imperial Service or Bakunin players.

The interesting twist for The Department is that each player normally controls ONE character on the board, and all the civilians/NPCs are controlled by a response grid.

The normal campaign progression requires you to get enough of the proper kinds of evidence before you can move on to the next mission. There is also a limit on how hard you can question the suspects. Get too many successes and your witness clams up! As a police game, there is also a limit on lethal force that makes the investigator's job more interesting.

I am still working out a mechanical conversion from the GOAL System used by the Department to the Infinity dice system. The good news is that the goal system uses face to face rolls. The bad news is that it uses multiple dice instead of the single die used in much of Infinity.

I really like the sound of this.(EDIT: Found time to do more research) So would you want to run this co-operatively? Also, what kind of Investigator levels would you be thinking(visa vi Moderators compared to Reverend Moiras). Perhaps people could spend budget/exp system and use a Spec Ops? Holoprojectors or Impersonators could be really interesting in these scenarios...

I hadn't worked that out yet. I mean, I could see someone playing the bad guys, just as easily as having everyone on the same side in a Co-op.

(FWIW, the authors of The Department have been working on a game called "Ghosts of Hefei," which deals with competing gangs in one of the major Replicant factory cities. Yes, it's like Necromunda or Mordheim)

And yes, Impersonation, TO Camo and Holoprojectors would throw a serious monkey wrench into the scenarios. Especially if I pulled out the lots-o-TO list. On the other hand, the only time I could see TO Camo happening would be in one of the SWAT missions. Impersonation or Holo might work in the regular scenarios, since there's already a "Hidden Investigator" clause in the NPC actions rules.
