Vissy's - A Gamers Steep Learning Curve

Please note this is a post for post dump from my original thread over at WAU. So bear with me a little bit while I bring the relevant parts over and it all will make sense a bit.

Thought I would chuck up a thread for ######s and giggles to track my horrible progression from crayon painter to table top not ashamed of what I did to that poor model painter. Not to mention see who else plays Haqqislam and see if I can get some friendly advice. Anyway pictures or it didn't happen. First test model the female Ghulam that comes with the starter set.



Got to say I'm happy enough with her. Shes not going to win awards but then again shes fully painted from boots to bright ranga hair and her kit looks worn in without being unserviceable. All in all happy with the overall look. Checkerplate bases are on the way from Back 2 BaseIX to replace the pliar damaged (dipping will do that) bases

Paints are a mix of MR Hobby, GW (last range before the new puss was released) and Tamiya Acrylic Paints. Dipped with an Army Painter Strong Tone and finished with an Army Painter Anti-shine.

2nd Ghulam from the set had its painted laid down and has being dipped he is drying on the painting table as we speak I'll hopefully get a picture up of them both tomorrow evening. Something with a little distance to put them in better perspective.

Concept is my force has being rapidly deployed to on going urban operations and has yet to be outfitted with armour/equipment that better reflects that AO so for now its grey fatigues and their normal TAN operational armour/equipment. This is really just a sorry excuse for the fact that all of my Tamiya mixed green, olive drab and tan ranges have dried up and are now useless. So they get grey and the Janissaries and other more elite forces will be better equipped and camouflaged. Think something like this and you won't be far off my final goal.

Next few purchases will be a more Ghulam Infantry, at least one with a HMG, a Panzerfaust or two and something to use a Ghulam Doctor. Not overly fond of the Ghulam Doctor model I think its a bit on the rough side so I might use the same model I've shown already and change or pose a bit, add a little more webbing and paint her back pack up like a medical bag.

After much work and a few coughing fits later got the final Guhlam out-of-the-way.

Alas when I went to dip him I also took my 2nd one down to spray and he has fogged up a bit, hopefully once it dries completely it will clear up. If not I'll just suffer in my jocks because the idea of stripping and redoing it for such a minor imperfection is just alien to me.

Enough jibjab I promised photos or it didn't happen. This is slightly shopped (brightness and contrast) having trouble with lighting and camera right now; far to lazy to fix either.



Slowly coming together order of painting is left, right and then the middle. Misting has gone away, or at least is not as noticeable now. His weapon was particularly bad. Each one has its imperfections but that said the quality of paint going on its better each time. Detail is more pronounced (dipping permitting) will start on the Naffatun today hopefully get her finished.

Just last night I got the following cleaned, built a based for painting. 1 x Ghulam w/ Panzerfaust, 2 x Naffatun w/ Heavy Flamer, 1 x Naffatun w/ Light Flamer & a kit based starter set Jannisary that has the Hassassin Muyib from the Bahram starter kit arms. I had a spare set of arms since my starter set was packed incorrectly and had Oniwaban body instead of a Hassassin Muyib body. Anyway they are down stairs drying after being undercoated.

Speaking of which if anyone has a home for said Oniwaban body I'll let it go cheap. Otherwise I'll kit base it into something else maybe use it as a base for a custom Merc: Miyamoto Mushashi.

Managed to finish painting the Hazunkot I started back in August. For the record I hate that model and will probally rarely use it.

I also managed to get all of my Back 2 Baseix resin bases cleaned and painted.

Not much to show really but its progress.

Right well here are the finished doctors!

Little on the paint job and what I'm doing from the pledge thread.

I've got the three Ghulam miniatures from the starter pack on the go and the light flamer Naffatun. Two of the Ghulams will be representing Doctors. I'm no expert with green stuff so there is little I can do to alter the miniatures themselves especially the female on the right. So instead I've gone for white ballistic vests and bright red back pack and knee guards. To tie it all together with my other Ghulams they have the same fatigues, leather boots, gloves & basic webbing. Now I know this is a little less than true to life but in reality soldiers are generally universally trained in combat first aid these days and often the doctrine is to finish or break contact before moving in to casualty response. In the end I decided the red & white is universally viewed as the colours of a ‘paramedic’ and besides it adds colour to a currently lacklustre set of hand clappers.

Not sure which bases I'll put these on yet. I have two industrial ones with red and white tiles but that might be pushing the red too far. Anyway a couple models closer to fielding a fully painted force at least.

Yeah after picking up that Haqqislam sale from Tossy here on WAU. I am rolling in Haqqislam models. Now the only problem is painting crunch.

Anyway no minatures have being worked on this week.

Instead it was all terrain work.

Janissaries on the go.

The one on the left is the one I had issues with the dull cote with so I washed him with a little turpentine. Gave him a quick coat of tinned dip again and he is drying in this photo. Will dull coat him again when the heat and humidity is down (so probably never) cheers Brisbane!

The one on the right is what I’m working on now.

The one on the bottom is the same model as the finished one but with the arms swapped for a Hassassin Muyib. Really don’t want to paint him the green stuff job on those arms is so bad.

4 Colour palette to keep it simple excluding the Boltgun Metal and whatever red I use for the eyes but they don’t really count.

Army Painter Strong Tone covers up my ######ting paint job and makes them look like dirty dirty boys.

Janissary on the left is nearing completion and is the first model I've tried doing the hazard stripes on.

It will take me a very long time to get this right. I've looked into creating printed ones that I can just stick to the bases but the fact the bases are bevelled makes it too hard.

Stencilling might be the way to go; but I don't own an airbrush.

Either way I think I have to continue with it because it really contrasts with my intentionally washed out and monotonous paint jobs. Since anyone who has worn camouflage uniforms in will know after a while all of the colours start to fade in together.



Same models again just the right has being brushed with neat Army Painter: Strong Tone just to show you how liberally I brush it on.

I will use Testors: Dull Coat on it tomorrow or on Boxing Day if the weather is suitable then give it a wash of GW: Barab Black to dull it down even more.

For those of you who haven't seen them on The Infinity Australia Farcebook or elsewhere on the WAU Forums.

Field of View (FOW) hazard stripe markers are now in place on my models.



From left to right,

Cut out stripe brush on plain white glue onto base then affix paper strip. Line up on cutting board or other straight surface and cut off extra paper. You should only have the front or back 180 degrees marked. Once you're happy with where it's placed paint a wash of 50% water 50% white glue over the paper and set aside to dry.

Next take some black paint thin it slightly let's say 70% paint to 30% water using this either slowly go around the edge of the paper covering cut edge or take your brush and lie it on a side on to the base and run right around the rim of the base then reverse and do the top of the base. Both will cover the white paper but the later will create more variation which will help weather the strips. Set aside to dry.

Next I have used Army Painter: Strong Tone to seal the paper and paint. You could use 50% water 50% white glue wash again or something like pledge or even just spray it with a varnish.

Finally to remove any shine left from the varnish/sealer give the base a quick black wash. Let's say 80% water to 20% paint; and then you have it the perfect lazy mans 180 degree field of view for Infinity.

Using this method I have finished all of my painted models very quickly.

This takes the total number of painted figures to 15 out of like 90 but atleast I've painted enough to field a pretty vanilla force of all painted models!

So yeah I've being painting in the same sense as children paint those paint by numbers books.

Anyway I have not made any real progress since I finished my Janissaries. This is mainly because I really didn't know what to paint next. The Hassassin model range is so detailed I feel I can't do them justice and frankly almost all of the goddam Infinity range is like that. So I've kind of made my decision to work on regardless of details.

Now this will piss some people off and Frankly My Dear, I Don't Give a Damn. Why because for a long time I have always though even some of the best painters in the world spend to much time on the details with these figures considering they are table top models. Armies should "pop" to use the much used gamer term yes but they shouldn't look busy while they do it. A themed force works on more levels for me than a force that is made up of 8 to 16 odd master pieces that don't quite meld together. So I will continue on with my Haqqislam force using a pretty subdued and simple palette because I'm painting soldiers; toy soldiers but soldiers none the less.

FAT-chikoma™ is GO!

Still very WIP the grey you can see is a very cheap Grey Primer from the cheapest rattle can you can buy at Bunnings. I strongly sugguest you do not use it for models! Its very hit and miss, in this case I had to spray prime it then brush on another base coast of Vallejo US Dark Green over the top just to get it to paint normally. I have used it before without and issues but this time its just being more trouble then its worth.




Really struggling through some painters block with these models especially the Khawarijs is a great model but its so hard to field the dam thing. I'm basically painting these two before I like the models more so than I want to field them often.

Little update took the time to clean my painting area.

1 x FAT-chikoma finished currently working on the base.

1 x Ghulam doctor needs some new paint after breaking his arm off.

3 x Old starter boxset Ghulams in the back with their first slap of paint.

1 x Huzunkaut same as above.

1 x Lasiq same as above.

1 x Kum Biker who is destined for the strip because I hate the paint job and the model is one you do not paint after its made.

1 x Khawarijs nearly complete

1 x Bashi with his first base layer down.

2 x Kemeel remotes with first base layer down as well.

Allot of work left to do and all needs to be toddler proof.

So being kicking around the idea of running a Qapu Khalqi sectorial list for a while but need to give my Ghulam link team something to really reach out and touch someone with.

Just knocked up this little mod now; he is a combination of one of the old boxset Ghulam LI w/ Rifle and the new boxsets Huzunkaut w/ Sniper Rifle. I'm happy enough with the outcome it looks allot better than the old Ghulam w/ Sniper Rifle that thing was horrible.

Has being painted with a mix of Formula P3 paints and Vallejo Model Color. Then hit with the dip and washed with GW Badad Black


Still shiney as it needs its dull coat/matte varnish

LOOK KINSMAN LOOK! LOOK how many I have to put stripes on and this still isn't enough for the whole haqqislam force. Thats 40 x 25mm bases so far and 10 x 40mm plus 1 x 80mm that Blind Pig lazer cut for me. I have no idea how I'll do the stripes on that last one


20 x 25mm Round Sci-fi / Tech Bases all base coated, washed with dip then either highlighted or washed again with a mix of cheap artist paints or ye olde citadel inks.


5 x 40mm Round Sci-fi / Tech Bases painted the same as the 25mm. If you like them you can purchase them DIRT CHEAP with postage include from the UK mob called evil mushroom.

P.S. that model now has its hazard stripes glued to the base and the white edges have being black lined now I need to let it dry for a bit so I can put a little dip on it to make it look really nice and weathered.

This is what I've being working on the last few days.

Rebasing a prepainted Yu Jing force I purchased from another Australian Infinity player.

He had them on the normal bases with some really nasty gravel/static grass and lichen it was just really distracting from the models. So I've redone them on a mixture of Back 2 Base-ix Industrial Bases, Checker Plate Bases & Evil Mushroom Sci Fi/Tech Bases.

Anyway the look a dam sight better now.



They will hopefully all get Hazard Stripe FoV (Field of View) Markers on them tomorrow and in the future I'll hit them with the dip/wash technique I use on my Haqqislam and these will be my 2 main demo forces.

I'm off for a gaming tomorrow (Friday) and hopefully another the day after!

Looks like the previous owner did a nice job on those oranges. Can we get some close-ups?

I totally agree with the basing. I think less clutter is better, especially with brightly-painted minis. My Aragoto don't have any details on their bases, it's all pure smooth 'concrete'.

Now, something like the Ariadna models with Sapper and those scenic bits, those you can go a bit nuts on the base.

Yeah sure,

The paint job is certainly one that doesn't warrant allot of close up attention on most of the models. I would say Katsune is by and the far the best painted of the lot and even she had some strange highlighting in odd areas.

That said the overall scheme has grown on my and I'm likely to continue it into my own ISS Sectorial. Now I just need to source some of the last series of GW paints through or atleast find a good substitute for GW Blazing Orange as that is the main color he has used.

VMC has oranges, and so does VMA. But you have to see them live, Vallejo has a very creative way of naming, even if the names look sane. VMA Fluo Red... is more like Safety Orange.

Being a while since I really updated this.

Whats being going on?

• Lots of work on and off on terrain.
• I've acquired some beautifully painted Aelph from one of Australia's if not the worlds best miniature painters.
• I got the ######s not literally but figuratively that I will likely never be able to match the painting of skills of said miniature painter and then go over it which leads to the next point.
• Finally I actually painted some models .... while starting a whole new faction cause well this is Infinity and 1, 2, 3 factions isn't enough might as well have 4!

Anyway enough about whats being happening have some pictures.



Starting force for a super reasonable NIB price if I'm not mistaken all of that + the new none cat girl Dakatari came in under $40.00 AUD. That is just a remarkable price all things considered.

Force can go all the way to a SWC light 200 points.

This does break one of my cardinal Intro/Demo rules in having an hacker but since I own the Interventor and Hacking is one of the quintessential things that Nomads do so very well I'll overlook it in this force. This will not be my go to intro game list though. My Haqqislam and Yu Jing lists still fulfill that. My Shock Army and Nomad lists have little extra interesting pieces in them to show how easy it is to go from 'standard' to 'quirky' or 'different' lists Infinity is.





Core colour scheme has being chosen; it draws on inspiration from Scarecrows recent work on his Corrigor force which I believe in turn was influenced by another Infinity player elsewhere in the world and so the great circle of inspiration continues.






Feed back is welcome because these are finished 'painting' still needs a clear coat varnish then its just needs to go one its BACK 2 BASE-IX Checkered Plate base to be completely done though.








Paints Used: GW Foundation, GW Layering, Tamiya Colour,Vallejo Model, Vallejo Game & Army Painter Washes basically freak-en every range of paints I own to find the colours I want.

That is about it.
