My first attempt at building an ariadna list

by Greggoman » August 18th, 2015, 11:43 am

Hey guys I made a video on my first attempt at building an ariadna list (brand new player) for an escalation league I'm taking part in. Comments would be much appreciated

Well, seems you have realised the msot important trick by yourself: you need Orders. Enough Orders.

The usual rule-of-thumb most infinity players adhere to is "at least 8 Regular Orders in your main Combat Group on table at the start of turn #1" - the Line Kazaks will be really useful here.

Now, I'm not an Ariadna player myself (3 sectorial armies on my shelf make keeping up difficult enough for a time being :P) but I believe that you're calling the poor Uragan Tractor Mul out unnecessarily.

Sure, it isn't as good as a typical Total Reaction HMG REM in the Total Reaction role, but it also isn't meant to substitute for it (rather for a TR Baggage drone). And as such, it is scary like hell! And I'd find it difficult to tell whether it is better to have a Katyusha (for the DA ammo) or Uragan (AP+Shock, burst 3 outside of Guided mode) with me.

Keep in mind they are both capable of Guided and Speculative fire, though, obviously, without a FO to effectively mark a target they aren't likely to hit a thing. But a Round Template AP+Shock weapon, capable of Speculative Fire is scary. A Burst 3 Speculative Fire (unless I'm messing something up) is downright terrifying...

Hmmm, ok I will have to think a little bit more about the traktor mul then. I didn't actually realise there would be an ammo switch I misread and thought it was just loosing total reaction. Could you explain the baggage thing to me, I'm not sure what that does?

Baggage is, basically, a Human Sphere rule, so it will be really detailed in HSN3 for the current edition.

As of now, it does 3 things:
1. Counts as extra 20pts value for determining your Retreat point. So, a basic Mul Minesweeper costs 5pts, but when counting your army for Retreat it is worth 25pts (sadly, both when active, and when destroyed).
It comes useful from time to time, though in N3 apparenlty less than in 2ed.
2. Allows you to carry away a model of any size that got Unconscious (it is called CASEVAC, for "casaulty evacuation"). A Baggage model is excepted from the rule that you can only CASEVAC a model of the same or less strength (I mean, PH value): it can haul a frackin' TAG wreckage and drag it out of combat. It can also do other things while moving an unconscious model (like - dodge, shoot and so on), without dropping it to the ground, as any unit with no Baggage would.
This is rarely useful, but some scenarios, for example in the 20x20 mission system, allow Baggage bots to haul extra cargo compared to other miniatures.
3. Restock weapons with Disposable trait on models that spent theirs. You deployed all your Mines / E-Maulers / D-Charges, shot both rounds from a Panzerfaust / Blitzen / Akrylat Kanone / what not? Easy peasy, the Baggage bot has spare ammo for you (move into base-to-base contact with the Baggage, and have the Baggage Bot spent a Short Skill, no roll required), so you can cancel that "Unloaded" state!
I find it the most useful ability of Baggage models so far (though back in 2ed there were a couple of times when it was Baggage keeping me from getting into Retreat...).

even though I am planning to use an uragan next tournament, I am not really happy with the results I had with the trak muls so far.

The main reason being that it is very order intensive to use them with Forward Observers. The FO would probably better off shooting the target herself in most situations. If you want to use the three shots from the uragan, you still need to roll dice successfully. If you are going for guided, you miss out on two shots and the opponent can still dodge.

The accuracy of trak muls are obviously horrible. SWC 1 and the need for a 14pt dozer does not increase its attractiveness.

Order effectiveness is the same with any other faction. I've tried a GML list in my Bahram recently, and that seemed to be the main problem...

The problem with trak muls is that they hardly ever hit anything if they are not assisted by FO. Uragans at least have the Total Reaktion skill. Every now and then somebody gets into their sweet spot zones.
