N3: That New Book Smell

Just a few minutes ago the doorbell rang and there was the UPS guy with my copy of N3!

Initial thoughts...

Pros
Gorgeous Covers
Beautiful layout
Full Color
Miniatures and terrain are simply stunning (kudos to the photographer/s)
Excellent Diagrams
Font Size is probably a 11 or 12 point so even I can read it!
Text density per page is reduced
Weapon Charts are easy to read

Cons
Paper weight is a bit on the light side

The Scenery Item Profile Chart (pg 170) is very cool!

As cool as the new hacking rules are, they have included counters...anyone worried that TAGs are useless now should rest easy as that is not the case.

Special Ammo Quick Reference Chart (pg. 114) going to be book marked!

I think people are going to love this new incarnation of Infinity!!!

This site has a lower file limit.

Found something that looks like astray text or typo, and a couple of dubious changes (avoidable font size changes, and thing out of the box, probably caused by "design über function"). Use of bold, italics etc still random as in previous books, which would make a long collection of style fixes.

It took some time to figure the color code of the boxes (green short skill and maybe more, black auto, yellow only aro, red full order).

But it seems they are learning to avoid extreme inking where you normally place the fingers and also a good size for the bounding edge margin.

While I don't post on the official forum anymore, I checked the thread. I agree, updating only basic book units to N3 standard (and then, apparently, only some of them - as several units from the 2ed core rulebook have been reported to be missing form the N3 rulebook) and withholding the .pdf update / army builder update for another two months is a weird decision, and definitely, in my opinion, a shot into one's own foot regarding the growth of community.

Still, once I get my copy and make my local meta familiar with N3 rules, why shouldn't we get back to the basics for a couple of weeks? I mean, we still have to learn the new rules. We can as well do it with a limited unit selection and no Link Teams...

I don't see how it could come as a surprise to anyone that HS and Paradiso units and rules wouldn't be in the core book? They've been stating that as long as I can remember, that the core book is just an UPDATE to the core book, it doesn't update all 3 books at once.
So now the people who have HS or Paradiso don't get screwed over with obsolete books in about 2 years after release (like GW did with WH40K 7th edition).

I'm post-HS myself. Worked pretty neat before Paradiso. Plus we had some models / profiles from Paradiso released earlier (then again, often added to the Army Builder months later).

Alas, off to do some painitng.

I'm guessing... no. They be available soon enough, and we can all get down to talking about the important stuff.

I started when the Riot Grrls had just been released; the model in store and the .pdf on their site.
Right now this Dactyl is standing around, wondering when she might possibly get to be fielded.
They really need more people, I guess. Too much on their collective plate..

I think even with more people they would release new models before the rules. Different pipelines, different processess, different completion times.

Bigger companies delay the release of the other until both are done, would that be preferrable?

They managed with the Grrls and more recently with the Nikoul and Kotail; they used to get it right, now they're very busy and they're getting it wrong. So I do think having more people around would solve the issue, since it's the increased workload that seems to have impacted the way they release things..

I am not going to try to defend what I did. All I can say that it was not done with any malice on my part.

I am going to disagree with you.

When you remove the profit motive for creating Intellectual Properties, what remains as the incentive for creation of IPs?
Answer: Nothing.

There are two reasons too share...one is to promote...one is to defraud.
Corvus Belli promotes the sale of their game by making the rules available for free.

I do not endorse defrauding anyone of revenues for the IPs that they produce.

You want beautiful art, music, literature, and yes even games?
Then those efforts HAVE to garner profit...at least until somebody figures out how to feed, cloth and shelter these creators with good will and likes.

One of the newer players (well, frankly, all y'all are newer players than I am, I bought my first Infinity models back in late 2005 or early 2006, before the 1st Edition book was released!) commented that it seems that one of CB's goals for the N3 book was to make a good beginner-level starting point.

So the rules from Human Sphere and Paradiso should rightly stay where they are as 'advanced rules', and some models were pulled from N3 Core to be re-introduced with the rest of their sectorials (like Keisotsu).

And you know what? That's a pretty reasonable design decision. I might not have made it myself if I was the project manager, but it makes sense.

The Army list PDF thing doesn't. You have paper profiles scattered across 2 or 3 different files, and the whole thing is now being delayed for some unspoken reason. If Army5 is having issues, that's grounds for putting the Army List PDFs out sooner, not later.

Despite my having played the game since it was launched, I can only play Vanilla Yu Jing with what's in the N3 book. Can't play my Zero-Gee Nomads, most of them are from HS and Paradiso. Can't play my Hassassins, either, for the same reason. Might be able to play my Ariadna, but I think even most of them are in HS and Paradiso. Now, since I have dang near everything Yu Jing, oh, wait, my mistake. The entire ISS list is in HS and/or Paradiso, and so is the JSA. So even though I own something like 3500 points of Yu Jing, I can only use about 1000 points that's been released in the N3 books.

The surprise is that it includes new profiles, and drops old ones. And I am not talking about Exrah. People have already went "why no X?" followed by "Because HS! Oops, no, sorry, not HS, but original book... no idea then".

But the other two books are partially obselete, as it seems the change is a lot bigger than 1st ed to 2nd. New skills, changed points and CC, silhouetted... rules wise, the other two books are of partial use. Maybe they need to get rid of old stock. The offer some years ago sounded like that (2nd and HS for the price of one plus shipping, IIRC).

Encountering similar problems here. Only opponent near is Tohaa player as well double unlucky. I expect to start teaching n3 basics though, with a few simple adjustments. (HI 4-4 etc).

But one thing to keep in mind is the fact that it has been two days since the first guy got his book. Those days have been weekend days. I actually expect the army list to be available next week. Not army5 and such, but just PDF files of other units. This information should be finished for months now.

I expect they are waiting for its2014 to stop, before switching to another infrastructure for the game.

Found the reference to one missing unit: Keisotsu Butai. Can anybody with the book confirm they are not there?

Wasn't CB working in the book until the last minute? If they have so few time, they probably have not done much of things that had been promised to appear 3 months or so in the future. Info yes, but no layout, etc.
