Watching the BOW batrep today, and seeing how lucky the CSU got on Killian's first turn, it reminded me of a recent game of Fleeting Alliance I played with Security Remotes. Even though in that game the remotes weren't terribly dangerous, they did force both sides to burn quite a few orders on turn 1 just to deal with the remotes.
So it occurred to me that remotes might be a good "solve" to the current perceived first-turn dominance. I know the advice is to create non-balanced tables, but frankly that can be difficult. Instead, placing three (or so) security remotes right down the center line of the table will force the first player to burn (at least) 3 orders to deal with them. I think I'll try this in future games when I think the table's too "even".
