Tallon's Comic-Style

by TallonHunteR » July 6th, 2014, 11:27 am

step 1: block out your basic colors, making sure none are absolute black (white is fine)

step 2: wash using a dark shade that wont ruin the base colour, dont bother making it heavy, it just needs to be dark enough to see the lines.

step 3: do your absolute highest highlight now, dont bother getting it thin right now, that part comes later (and if you do, you'll probably have to repeat this step after step 4.

step 4: take a fine or super fine point brush and using your black paint blackline every transition of material, colour, and any sharp recesses.

repeat steps 3 and 4 till you have nice even black lines.

step 5: take an intermediate colour and go over half your highlight lines, this thins the highlight and blends it with the basecoat.

will be adding wip pictures soon

This is very similar to what I have done in the past - it has taken me a lot of trial and error to get it right, but yes I love the way that makes the mini have a comic-y style, anime ish.

I could share a pic of one of my minis painted this way later this afternoon if you don't mind.

These are WIPs pictures of a knight when I first started using this method - only difference is that instead of using a paintbrush for the black lines I used a super small micron pen.

It is an easy way to add definition to the mini and makes stuff "pop" (these are horrible pictures I know, I'll take some better ones and not use the Iphone's "enhance" next time)

OP, please let me know if you would like me to take these down, I dont mean to hijack your thread!

That's pretty cool! I may give it a shot. It really looks striking if done right.

Would you care to provide a visual step-by-step tutorial, with large pictures in high resolution?

I'm pratty sure it would be far easier to follow should someone want to replicate your style.

Fill up the wine cup and place it in my hand

I have a recommendation for the black wash:

I use one drop of Vallejo Game Ink Black, one drop of matte medium, and 5-8 drops of water, then wash the entire model with this mix. The idea is to make the mix as thin as possible so that the only place that really shows the black lines is the various recesses in the model. You need the matte medium (or Future floor polish/Pledge with Future Shine) in the mix to break the surface tension and prevent puddling, and it also helps the mix flow into the cracks and crevices.
“I'm curious, son. When has 'This might be a trap' ever stopped you?”
“Stopped? Never. Slowed me down while I load the guns? Every time.”
