Tohaa Skin Color/Tone

by farseerixirvost » July 28th, 2014, 4:28 am

Anyone done a non-standard skin color on their Tohaa? If so, got pics to share?

Also, here's hoping I can figure out what is actually skin vs. body suit and armor when I get started on my Tohaa project...  ;)

It's a weird one - some of the art depicts that 'banded' stuff on the tops of their arms (see the Makaul) as their skin, but it just looks weird. In the same vain, that banded stuff appears on their shoulders and neckline, but on the models they've been painted as an undersuit to the armour. The skin tones I've used are fairly similar to the studio scheme, however.

I've painted mine up as if the banding is armour (images here: http://2screens.wordpress.com/2014/07/1 ... 13th-july/ ) and I'll be revisiting my Kamael to change the neckline banding to the same black as the undersuit.

As LeemanRuss says there are two weird parts on Tohaa, shoulders and neck. I have painted the neck as undersuit since the bands look a bit weird as skin. Painted the Makaul shoulders as skin but don't like it. Their shoulders are just weird :(

For the skin color I used Asari inspired, so blue and purple. The heads can be painted to look pretty nice by using two different constasting colors. First paint with one and then drybrush with the other one.

I did grey symbiont and yellow plate.

I went with a Reddish/Orange skin tone, loosely inspired by Mr. Darth Maul. I just didn't have the guts or skill to go for the tattoos. Another thing I took some inspiration from was the box art for the Makauls. In that artwork they appear (to me) to have large, batlike ears so I always paint the head spines that are located where the ears should be in the same orange skin color to facilitate that illusion. I painted the rest of the head spines purple, and I also painted the neck area banding purple as well, but left the arm banding orange and lost not a night of sleep worrying about what was flesh and what was cloth. Tohaa cloth is probably flesh anyway. :aaa:

When I get around to painting mine, I want to paint them like the gith from D&D, spots and all:

I'm planning on a "Guyver" (aka all symbiont armor) force, so they're all helmeted. Not sure what color to do the armor plates, but I'm doing the symbiont armor with fluorescent orange. Yes, honest-to-god glows under UV light fluorescent paints, maybe fluorescent yellow with an orange wash instead of straight fluo orange.

If I run with the factory paints, cream and black plates, I'd mess with Vallejo Model Color Stone Grey for the face.

However, I'm tempted to use some blue for the skin. Orange and blue are complimentary colors, so the two colors will make each other look brighter. Probably Andrea Blue with an Asurmen Blue wash and some darker-blue spots, like the smurfcats from AVATAR.

“Stopped? Never. Slowed me down while I load the guns? Every time.”
