I want to buy a friend into Infinity via Combined Army.

I'm going to buy a friend (who mostly paints) into Infinity via way of the Combined Army. What price-conscious set of attractive models should I choose from?

I ask because I'm told the starter packs are awful.

What new CA starter? Is it the one with those evil Tohaa? Or is there another one that I haven't seen?

Kind of weird to call that one vanilla since it seems to be geared towards whatever sectorial those guys will be from.

The old CA Starter wasn't a technically "legal" starter - there was no real LT option in the box as is.. Edit: Yeah, I had CA and the frogs mixed up. It wasn't a common choice around here. People went more towards angryredmonkeyfaces or the frogs. Sue me.

IME, trying to buy a friend into the game tends not to work so well (they start playing out of some sense of guilt because you bought them and they should at least try to play it.). I found it works out better if you just show them the stuff and allow them the illusion of free choice whether or not to get in. Then if they choose not to, mock their choice remorselessly and find a new friend.

I don't have many friends. :p

Maybe it's just my friends don't do the "guilting people into playing" thing, though.

Showing them the new combine set might be enough to let them opt in on their own, definitely. Unless they were ex-players who only left because caskuda ... Then it's kinda like adding salt to the wound whilst twisting the knife.

Perhaps just buy the CA starter yourself and then they can play againt you?
That way you get to paint, own it etc

I have started a number of people into infinity whom only ever played role playing or card games by scheduling a 'slow grow' game every fortnight or so. Basic rules at first then add close combat, hacking (im using the N3 hacking sheet and mechanics now in anticipation of the new version), LOL, linked teams, grenades etc.

They are competent now and can use the army builder to make lists based around the models i own. Either way cost of owning infinity is much less than larger wargames.

It's the Shasvastii Starter that's tricky for an LT. The old Combined one was fine.

Profiles with Army 5 which is coming with ITS 2015. It'll probably have everything you need to start playing with them. Maybe. Otherwise N3. And if you didn't order the book, that means the end of March 2015.
