A possibly useful Sekban team

by Errhile » April 9th, 2015, 9:10 am

I used a Corregidor Wildcat team yesterday, in a game against Military Orders.

The layout was

WILDCAT Lieutenant 0 19
WILDCAT Combi 0 19
WILDCAT Combi 0 19
WILDCAT BS 0 18
WILDCAT HRL 2 20

for a total of 95pts and 2 SWC.

I lost the HRL pretty quickly, so my long-range firepower went to hell, but I managed to re-form the rest, get rid of Joan of Arc who wandered too close (she jumped away after getting wounded for the first time, so I had to chase her with the Boarding Shotgun), lost another Wildcat to a Panzerfaust hit, but the remianing 3 made it into the enemy DZ and laid waste to un-linked Magister Knights (with a close-range shotgun blast)...

So, I've been thinking - perhaps a similar layout of a team would work for the Sekban?
They are a bit more expensive, and not as good shots as the Wildcats, and their AP Rifles aren't as good up close as the Combis, but still...

SEKBAN Lieutenant 0 22
SEKBAN APRifle 0 22
SEKBAN APRifle 0 22
SEKBAN BS 0 21
SEKBAN HRL 1.5 24

That's 111pts, 1,5 SWC.
A bit more Armour, and 360-wisor that Wildcats don't have (well, Wildcats are excellent unit - lean, not a gram of fat on their bones!). But we have to content with what we have.

At extreme ranges, the firepower is based on the HRL.
Close-up, you have a choice between Assault Pistol (high Burst) and Boarding Shotgun (high power, Terminal Template, high to-hit bonus). At mid-range, there are AP Rifles. Not as good as Multi, but still having an edge above the normal ones.
I'd consider having a Doctor instead of one of the riflemen (that's +3 pts, and losing an AP Rifle for a shotgun), this will bring extra resilience and allow for a funcionality the Wildcats don't have (the 4th team member yesterday could've been saved, if I had a Doc).

A spitfire could be handy to lay down 5 dice of pew-pew too
Every bit makes it more expensive of course ...
We also have the possibility of grabbing a nearby Hafza when reforming the team after one or two died

Well, a Spitfire is nice, but it makes the team twice as expensive SWC-wise, and I really don't see a niche for it here (that's why mu Wildcat team didn't had one either).
I mean - if the range is real long, you will be using the HRL. In mid-range, linked AP rifle is likely to fit in acceptably (of course, Spitfire is way better in the 16-24 range band), that's still 4 dice of Linked fire, and against well-armored targets, it will deal just the same or better damage than Spitfire. An extra die of fire just doesn't seem to be worth the extra cost.

Of course - this is simply theorizing. This setup needs some playtesting!

Yeah, I'd take the Doctor. Keeping both AP rifles and just upgrade the BS one.

A thread by Errhile where he's considering to take the Sekban? :P Wow! N3 really gave them something.

The shotgunner is there to be used offensively against enemy targets at close range. The doc is there to fix him if necessary.
Doc can't fix himself...

I'm hoping to use a Haris team of 3 Sekban as a small defensive unit for ITS scenarios (defending the rearmost antenna in antenna field) while I use a Kaplan link team to try and get hold of the other ones.

Hoping that, in cover, they should be pretty survivable and the 360 visors should help with sneaking soldiers and air drop attacks. One guy is a HRL, then Haris leader and a doctor.

Yeah, seems to be the default layout for a Sekban Haris.

I used it last time (Paradiso train mission), and they felt OK (though being able to burn down an Asura with an incredibly lucky ARO from the HRL might be affecting my judgement)

Hmm.. I found out there effectiveness defending is limited when playing Transmission Matrix... my hackers failed Allah, complete hacker dominance to my opponent and then 'Spotlight' followed by some guided missile spam and their time in the game was a brief one.. :(

Looking forward to trying them again though, their selection of weapons (just having something like the Chain Colt) just makes them very versatile as a team.

I'm not impressed with the Chain Colt, I find the Boarding Shotgun preferrable for close-in encounters.
But I agree, in some situations a DTW can be useful.

No, I'm sorry. I didn't had Aliens in mind when writing it (besides, IIRC when I watched it for the first time, it wasn't in English, so, you know...).
But you're right, it sounds way like a deliberate quote :)

Have you tried the team out Errhile? So far, using them as a defensive link team with hrl has been useful. He did not destroy it but proved to be a match for my opponents Gecko for three turns in the first Paradiso mission (neither died, frustrating yes but also hilarious). Next mission I plan to bring two hrl in a harris team. I have yet to use the full team as an objective defender by combined ordering them to suppress.

I did fielded a Haris link of Sekban recently, in a semi-defensive role (the board layout meant I had to spend several Orders getting the HRL into an advantegeous position). Then, I managed to crit an Asura Spitfire in ARO, who after that Crit failed 2 consecutive ARM rolls vs. Fire, and burned down like a haystack.

Which was pure luck, and in my eyes, not enough material for assessment, you know...

To report on the game I had yesterday. The two rocket launcher haris team is a force to be reckoned with!

My opponent and I were playing mission 102 of Paradiso, I won the roll off and decided to go first and my opponent decided to deploy second. I managed to deploy the team with a Gulam doctor on a small building directly looking towards where I believe that my opponent would put a sniper in a very commanding tower on his deployment edge. What do you know, he puts a Grenzer up there with a Dakaris. First round, my turn, I fired three shots from one of the rocket launchers, takes one wound and goes unconscious with no fire damage. First round, his turn, he brings the Grenzer back up with the Dakaris and (I really should have told him it was inadvisable) to get up from prone and shoot one shot at both rocket launcher Sekban...I think two or three shots got thru to the Grenzer who goes unconscious and kills the Dakaris who got hit by the blast.

Needless to say, I found it to be rather effective link team after that if a bit overkill. Though the real mvps of the game where my five man Kaplan link team, especially the spitfire guy who took out most of the enemy units including a Gekco, a Reverend Moira and Cassandra Kusanagi. All that while forgetting to add +3 bs for being in a five man link

If you are curious, I won the game 4-3 and I nearly wiped out his army...the poor sod was so salty after that. I just wanted to give him a hug :glomp:
