Looking to do a demo game...

by Oreet » February 15th, 2013, 3:46 pm

So for the past couple of times I've played Infinity, my girlfriend came along and watched. She's expressed some interest in trying the game out, so I want to put together 2 lists to do a demo game with her.

I own about 90% of all released Nomad miniatures, and Everything that exists for Tohaa so far except the newest box set.

So I'm thinking of setting up a 100ish point match between 2 Nomad forces. I want to avoid the Tohaa for now because of some of their funky rules like the Symbiote armor.

So here are my list ideas:

List 1:
4 Alguaciles with Combi Rifles
1 Mobile Brigada with Multi Rifle
1 Zero with Combi

List 2:
4 Moderators with Combi Rifles
1 Riot Grrl with Multi Rifle
1 Zero with Combi

These will NOT be sectoral lists, as indicated by the Zero in list 1. Now there is about a 10 point discrepancy between the two lists (Mobile Brigada costs about 10 points more than the Riot Grrl).

So for demo purposes, should the Moderator list have a 5th Moderator to even the point cost, or would it be better off to have an even model count and even count of types of troops (4 LI, 1 HI, and 1 SK)?

Personally, I think using grunts with the same BS is really important in Demo games. A good amount of newbies tend to get the PanO>others impression, since their grunts have higher BS. That said, just give it a try with the current setup, with you picking the side with the fewer points. In my experience, letting a potential player win their first demo game will give them a huge motivational boost.

Makes sense. I just didn't want to have 2 copies of the same list facing each other, but I also didn't want to proxy stuff.

I'll take the Moderator list, which has lower cost, and lower stats all around.

Figure these lists will give her a good grasp of the standard rules, as well as some special stuff like multi-wound troops and camouflage.

I don't think you should use camo units in a demo. Save the camo rules for the second or third game. Also I think you should stick with 2 identical lists. It makes it easy for the new person to understand and they can learn how to use their models by seeing what you do with the same models in game. Identical lists also give a sense of fairness. Always a good thing where playing a GF.

Let me help myself to this thread :)

I'm going to do a newbie demo next week - he hasn't played any games at all, assume he's read the rules but doesn't know how it works in practice so no camo/hackers/ad/whatever (I'll keep a list with some of it on hand if he asks). I'm thinking the following sides:

2x Alguacil combi
Alguacil HMG
Mobile Brigada multi+LFT
Morlock chain

vs.

2x Celestial combi (or alternatively, 2 Zhanshi, forgot Celestials are AVA 2 in vanilla)
Celestial spitfire
Invincible multi
Shaolin Monk chain

Simple and to the point. Impetuous shoudln't be too hard to grasp and a chain rifle shows that DTWs are a thing.
