Terrain Quick Ref cards

by Wirelizard » October 26th, 2015, 10:34 am

I really like Infinity's terrain system, the different combos of movement, visibility and saturation can have really interesting affects on game play, but almost all of it is ignored in the "standard" future-urban setting, and the extra complexity can be frustrating in an already complex game.

To that end, I've started on a set of quick ref cards for terrain, starting out with the "suggested standard" table in the main N3 rulebook.

I began with big cards, index-sized 3" x 5", then realized I could get everything I wanted onto a CCG-card size, which is a lot easier and means you can sleeve them very easily. It's also the size of the official Classified Objectives deck and Capt. Spud's awesome version of same.

Here's the current state of design:

They absolutely need full hostility level rules on the cards, so few people use those that sometimes I forgot they're even a thing, especially compared to terrain rules. And they aren't full - OK, Insecure means I get hostility effect on 20s, but what kind of effect do I suffer?

That said, I prefer tiny cards that can be put on the terrain blobs in question, like this:

WOODS
Difficult Jungle Terrain
Low Vis Zone (-3)
Saturation (-1 B)
Hostile (suffer DMG 10 on rolls of 19-20)

Hmm, small chits to be actually put out on the table might be something worth looking into eventually.

For the current cards, however, if I put all the body text down to 6pts (it's currently 8 most of the time except on MOV: Very Difficult) I could move the Hostility Level up a bit to include one or two lines of body text under it. That might mean resizing a bunch of stuff - I'll play around later this week when I get back to this project.

The one issue with the Hostile Environment rules as currently written is that even more so than the regular Terrain rules they're very fluid; you could reset the Hostility Level and the type/level of damage they do with every game, theoretically. That's why I was going to put them on a separate card, like the Storm card's effect.

Final draft version of the cards attached in PDF format, letter sized - I'll do A4 when everything is finalized.

Suggestions, proofreading, and comments, please!

New edition of these cards is up on my blog, with some tweaks from the previously-seen version and a new set of cards where each card has one of the terrain conditions (each of the four Visibility Effects, two Movement Effects, and two Saturation Zone Effects available) so you can do custom scenery as easily as picking two or three of the cards and putting them down beside the table.

PDF in both Letter and A4 sizes downloadable here: http://www.warbard.ca/2016/09/20/terrai ... -infinity/

Use "Can't declare orders of 2 Short Mov. Skills" (or as current but just "Mov.", or something in between), so it fits in the same line and Very Difficult text can be same size as others?

And "Troopers cannot draw LoF through it" as Zero Vis Zone is implied by the header. Page reference could be removed, or applied to all headers (near hex column?).

White Noise and Low Vis + WN will be tricky, maybe will have to stay different, but others could be same size. Other option is make the hexagon "free" like in the last cards and adjust the section headers up and down as needed.

Storm header could also be shortened to "VIS: Worsen VIS Conditions", text below explains fine and the bar could be single line. Replace "to" with "becomes" in both phrases?

Cards are reminders, if someone has doubts about wording, that is a task for the books (and the forums... and the FAQs... and flip a coin and move on :v: ).

Just ideas. Nice helper.
If not worth saving, is it worth rewriting? What is more, was it worth writing?

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions, MoB!

I'll loop back to do another version of this project at some point and incorporate most of them, I think.

It's always a challenge, when laying out quick ref material like this, to get the balance between completeness, brevity, and legibility right.
