I have only just discovered Infinity and am in the process of grasping the basics and deciding which faction to collect. With free rules and ample photos of miniatures, to aspects are really easy to follow, but I am having trouble with the final factor: fluff. For me, this is a very important factor and pretty well essential for me to enjoy myself (I love the story-telling aspects of the hobby). The total background to the game setting I have read so far could be written in a few paragraphs and is all VERY broad strokes that do not really give me any connection with the setting or its factions.
In the future, humanity went into space, economies fell, new powers rose, an AI appeared from somewhere, we went back into space, a new UN was created somewhere along the way and now aliens are attacking and more aliens are sort of allies (maybe?). That is my understanding of the basic setting, and I know only slightly more on individual factions. I know NOTHING about the fluff of the units in each faction!
Where is the fluff to Infinity to be found? Is there fluff behind each individual unit, or is the fluff mostly around the factions/sectarians as a whole?

Well, there used to be a bit of fluff for each unit going with it at the store.
Still, if you want the complete fluff, you'll need to get your hands on the Core Book (Infinity N3 basic set comes in two parts - the Rulebook, which is exactly what you can download from the website, and the Core Book, which is all about fluff - and not available free). You can, of course, buy it - but if there are Infinity players in your area, I'd suggest checking if you could borrow it (or at least, the now-obsolete 1e or 2e books - not everything is in them, but the main core of the fluff has not changed much).
Alternatively, you might just ask around the forums about particular factions / sectorials and their units. Sure, no-one is ging to re-type the book for you (for many reasons), but most of us have quite a lot of knowledge about our armies

The three books (rulebook/corebook - either 2nd ed or 3rd ed), Human Sphere and Campaign paradiso have the whole interlinked story/fluff for the game (well, up to now) - each new book adds stuff in. Elements which are fuzzy in one, get fleshed out a little more in the others. Especially Paradiso. You will learn the real fate of the second Ariadna colony mission and how it ties in with other threads.
Seconding Errhile's suggestion. If you have players who have been playing for a while locally, see if you can at least look through their books. I didn't often use the old books (but I will bring them to game days if requested so that new players can look over them). Even now, I mainly use the rules pdf on my tablet, but the N3 box is in the bag anyway.

That is a shame. I was hoping there would be an online resource like 40K's Lexicanum where I could get a grounding on the fluff before I bought-in. Thanks for the help!

Well, Infinity is the other way around: the rules are free, but the fluff you have to pay for.
Still, as I said, you can ask those who are long into the game. Like us on the forum
@ Chromedog - well, the same reason why I keep my old Rulebook and Human sphere at the LGS along with our terrain boxes. They come in handy when I need an eye candy for a prospective new recruit

I want to know a lot: the overall setting, the core of each faction, and the background of each individual model that I find interesting. A touch to much to ask someone to provide
Locally, I am the only analogue dinosaur around: everyone else prefers digital editions of things. I will just wait until I buy a copy of the rulebook and slowly read through the fluff there!

The unit background fluff texts are coming back, possibly this year even.
Actually, I would like to ask some specific questions.
I have continued to hunt for what I can and come across the following:
ALEPH: Seems to be intentionally mysterious, so it could be either humanity's saviour or doom. Has post-humans who are genetically engineered to be superior to regular humans.
Ariadna: Essentially four modern cultures thrust into the future and forced to work together (kind of). Has half-humans who are social pariahs.
Combined Army: An AI is conquering the galaxy. It sorts species it discovers into fighters, workers, or worthless things to be exterminated. Their army is (presumably) formed from the most dangerous and warlike species in the galaxy.
Haqqislam: An Islamic sect that left Earth to found a new caliphate and restore the golden age of Islam. It seems like they have succeeded.
Nomads: Criminals, refugees, Mafioso, anarchists and social outcasts in a loosely united coalition. Do not trust ALEPH. These guys do not make much sense to me!
PanOceanea: A global power that also controls the most planet-colonies. Closest allegiances to ALEPH. A blended, multi-cultural/multi-religious society that seems to have attained internal harmony.
Yu Jing: A global power who is begrudgingly second to PanOceania. Treats the Japanese as second-class citizens and uses criminals as meat-shields. Otherwise, has successfully blended various Asian cultures.
Do I have the basic idea on those factions, or am I missing some important points?

I know they are aliens and I know they hate the Combined Army (not surprising since you are either with them or against them), but I have no idea about anything else. Based on their models, it seems like there is more than one species in this army, and the rules suggest they are less technological and more bio-science compared to humanity, but I have no idea about their society or what their motivations are. Could someone give me the key points on these guys?

Seems you have it mostly right Of course, these descriptions are very brief, and the exact factions are deeper than that (for example, Haqqislam is a a reformed "New Islam", who venerate the Pursuit of Knowledge - and this made them Human Sphere's best doctors, planetologists and specialists in life sciences - not without a number of battlefield applications. Nomads are outcasts and "space Gypsies", a coalition of various independents who allied together for mutual protection and support).
Note: Tohaa background is covered by 2ed. book "Campaign: Paradiso"
Tohaa are an alien species whose technology is based primarily on biotech (with things like symbiotic armors and "exalted" less advanced species rather than drones. Some could consider that a form of slavery). They are opposed to Evolved Inteligence and its Combined Army on basic philosophical grounds: Tohaa are (supposedly) the only remianing Keeper race: guardians to the mysterious T'zeenchi Digesters, archives of vast knowledge, whereas EI is a Seeker civilisation who hopes to decode and use the knowledge it contains to further its own agenda of transcendence.
Tohaa are not uniform, though, and they manage a lot of their affairs by back-stage manipulation.
Humanisty's status regarding the Digesters is as of now yet undetermined: humanity managed to obtain one of these on Paradiso (in fact, as a result of a plot orchestrated by one of the Tohaa factions), and now is working to decode it. Though there are Tohaa agents and sciencists participating in the project who are there to see that won't happen.
As you may have noticed, common enemy (the Combined Army) have made Humanity and Tohaa allies. Still, Tohaa intend to play the senior role in this alliance, and get themselves better on the bargain. Some beings on Humanity's side do already understeand that fact...

Their basic family unit consists of three members (one of the three adults leaves the family once a child is born, then there will be no next child untill the first one is ready to leave the parents, and so on). I'd suggest you play a couple of demo games (with whatever proxies you have), perhaps checking a few different factions you find interesting, before investing in actual Infinity miniatures.

I'll have a fluff encyclopedia page up eventually, but it's been pushed back due to a large writing project that's dominated my past few months of "hobby time."
