Infinity co-op dungeon crawl board game idea

by Levitas » July 10th, 2014, 4:12 pm

So I was bored and started playing Warhammer Quest on my phone, which is decent by the way. I had good times as kid with that game, and enjoyed the co op dungeon crawl and RPG light nature of it. But overall I prefer sci fi to fantasy, so have looked at Mercs Recon for a similar fix. I missed the kick starter, and the Mercs universe isn't something that grabs me. So why not put together a home brew version using the Infinity universe? Just for fun and to play within my local community.

Anyone know of anything similar to Warhammer Quest and Mercs out there already? If not any ideas on how the concept would look in the Infinity universe? Maybe a squad of spec ops infiltrating a Combined base, or an abandoned facility controlled by a rogue AI and it's skittering minions.

Any crazy cool ideas and suggestions??

Sounds kinda Mass Effet, maybe you could take a cue from that.

Another game that springs to mind is Jagged Alliance or maybe even Fallout. Both computer games, of course.

And Warhammer Quest... on iPhone? Free? :D

I had the same idea. We should work on it together!

Here are my thoughts so far:

• Every player gets a slightly suped-up skirmisher of some kind (extra ARM and W, basically, so the game doesn't end too fast). Each player has a pool of three orders or so.
• Put a number of low-level guard and civvie models on the board, with pre-programmed routes to walk.
• Every turn, roll on a table determined by the mission. This table basically varies the actions of the guards, so that the players can't perfectly predict them. You know, you could roll "bathroom break" and one of the guards will deviate from his route to find a bathroom. Or you could roll "repair team" and three civvies will emerge from an elevator and walk to a random location on the map, spend a turn there, and then walk back to the elvator.
• Once any of the players is spotted, the game switches. You get a new random event table. The civvies evacuate and higher level guards come swarming out of the elevators. Possibly even nanoscreen meshes come down over some doors or combi rifle assault turrets pop up.

Of course, this is based on pretty serious scenario building...

@Arachas. Yeah for sure. Mass Effect is a great example! Oh and Warhammer Quest is a few bucks on iphone, i've spent more on Coffee and ads bother me in free games. There is stuff that you can buy but the game doesn't make it hard if you don't. I'd recommend that, and Hitman Go for a decent gaming fix on the move.

@ElectricPaladin. Those ideas sound great, possibly more in line with a custom Infinity mission rather than a separate game. Some superb ideas in there. I was thinking a little more simpler by just 're-skinning' the warhammer quest rules and adding in tweaks here and there for guns etc. I haven't played Mercs Recon but suspect there is stuff to pull from in it too. You could totally write a new game from the ground up and pay homage to the ARO system though with the ideas you have.

Okay, slightly OT: I have an iPhone 4, though. Not even a 4S, just a regular ol' 4. Will that still run stuff like that?

Possibly not. But do check the fine print and requirements to be sure. Here's the linky:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/warhamm ... 16833?mt=8

Back on topic. Does anyone know if any rule set like this is already out there, before I start hacking, twiddling and tweaking?

Well, I can't speak to that - I've never played Warhammer Quest. Though on your recommendation, I may go download it...

Not to beat a dead horse, but that's where my idea came from. Why reinvent the wheel when you can have a co-op game of Infinity by giving each player a slightly more durable (or customizable, if you really like making work for yourself) skirmisher and simple AI hostiles?

To make it even simpler? Maybe even use a board or set of rooms, with squares. And medics that work instead of kill you half of the times.

Or hexagons. :toot:
If not worth saving, is it worth rewriting? What is more, was it worth writing?

We ran a multiplayer game along these lines last year at Adepticon. Each player created a spec op using the weekends accumulated objective points for tourneys and pick up games as XP. Each player had an order pool equal to their starting Xp divided by ten, rounding up.

The game was played on an 8x4 boarding action table. To keep it simple players received points for what they killed, completing any of the ITS classified missions and there were 6 missions that were worth a lot of points but only could be scored once.

The ship was in habited by the entire morat line with an EI Presence. The morats played as though they were in loss of lieutenant the whole game. The EI had an order pool of various aspects that played similar to the G jumper rules.

Is this a "let's make an Infinity dungeon crawler" thread only, or can we suggest existing games? Because I love dungeon crawlers and I'm always on the lookout for more.

Titles that spring to mind at the moment (from most to least fitting setting):
Level 7: Omega Protocol
Galaxy Defenders
Doom
Earth Reborn

Paradoxically enough, I haven't tried any of those (L7 and GD being new, Doom is basically sci-fi Descent 1ed which I have all of and love to bits, and Earth Reborn... we don't talk about Earth Reborn. That game is cursed.)
