Warsenal are lovely and I'm an idiot.

by Force de Frappe » August 30th, 2013, 1:30 pm

Hullo - I live in the UK and made a Warsenal order a few weeks ago - which has just arrived.

I ordered the following:

Item # Description Qty
MK000-5 Magnetic Link Leader Marker 1
MK000-4 Magnetic Prone Marker 4
MK000-7 Magnetic Antipersonnel Mine Marker 4
MK-ACR-INF-OD-OR Fluorescent Order Marker - Fluorescent Orange 4
MK-ACR-INF-OD-GR Fluorescent Order Marker - Fluorescent Green 10
MK-ACR-INF-OD-OR Fluorescent Order Marker - Fluorescent Yellow 4
MK000-5 Magnetic Foxhole Marker 2
MK-ACR-INF-WD-RD Fluorescent Wound Marker 10
TM-ACR-INF-003-OR Mini Smoke Template Pack - Fluorescent Orange 1
MK-ACR-INF-P03-PK Suppression Markers - Fluorescent Pink 1
MK-MDF-INF-M01-8 Camo Markers - 8 Pack 1

The magnetic markers are lovely - the suppression and smoke markers are fine.

The Camouflage markers are jet black with bright blue bases - all opaque, which is different from how they are advertised on the website, where they are translucent with clear bases. So they don't look as good but they are still fine.

But my real complaint is the order and wound markers. They look like they have this thin layer of MDF across both sides of them. This is what they are MEANT to look like:
http://warsen.al/collections/markers/pr ... ous-marker
http://warsen.al/collections/markers/pr ... ous-marker
Nice, bright, translucent, easy to read whichever way up they are.

I deliberately bought 3 colours for impetuous, irregular and normal orders and I can barely tell them apart with the weird stuff covering over them. I don't understand why the smoke markers and suppression markers are exactly as advertised in nice, bright, translucent plastic, but the order markers are opaque and ugly.

Has anyone else had this trouble?

Force,

This thin layer of MDF your talking about would not happen to be the paper/sticky tape that is almost always put on acrylic/perspex to protect it in transit?

Basically can you peel it off?

I know for a fact some laser cutters will not always remove this protective layer before cutting and leave it up to the purchaser to remove and clean away any residue.

You're not an idiot. It's a very common thing. Glad you sorted it out though :)

I had the same thing happen to me with the blue bases for the camo markers. That blue film holds so well, and is translucent enough so as to cause the base to appear blue from the edge, that even handling the markers I thought they were a soft blue plastic and not simply covered in a protective a film!

The black camo markers are dark plastic.

The plastic bases have a blue protective film that should be removed. Many other plastic bits have a brown-backed adhesive paper on one or both sides, this is a protective layer that should be removed.

It's put on to the acrylic by the manufacturer of the sheets - for protection from scratches, etc during transport and machining.
Acrylic scratches quite easily - the scratches CAN be buffed out (silver polish) if you know what you are doing, though - computer case modders do it all the time.

It's a common thing to do - and even stainless steel sheet has a plastic protective coating on it for the same purpose.

It just makes sense for laser cutting businesses to leave it on and cut through it.

Why?

The reasons are two fold.

One: You want a clean & unscratched product delivered to you door and why pay more for packaging when the tokens/piece can already be protected from wear and tear if you don't need to.

Two: The purchaser may want to fill the laser cut/etched areas of your product. They can do this much easier if the paper is still attached. Simply by rubbing some paint into the etching with their finger then wiping the excess away. Finally after drying they can peel the paper off and hey presto beautiful clear Acrylic with perfectly paint filled etched areas.

The main reason the film stays on while cutting is because acrylic will ghost anywhere the laser touches it without it. We have started peeling acrylic again before shipping though to avoid confusion. Ben certainly wasn't the first person to ask why they got brown templates :)

If you do ever want something with the film kept on from us just say so when you order and we'll be happy to oblige.

VisOne's suggestion was great! I took the camo markers and used black paint to fill in the semi circle and the number on each one. It's not perfect but it makes it a lot more noticeable!

I say leave them on to save you the labour, all you need to do is print out some "This is why they are brown" leaflet and you won't get any more complaints. =-P

Yeah with my camo figures, I peeled off the blue protective cover on most of the base, but left it over the numbers. Now I've got clear bases with their numbers a very nice Infinity-esque shade of blue.
