Spring '15 Entries [Data-Sphere Painting Campaign]

I don't always do washes it all depends on the color, for some reason the Vermillion red using sunny skin tone and bone white tend to come out a bit pink so I use the red wash to bring the color in the center back to red. I'm sure when I start using the exact recipe that Angel recommends It should be better, that and lots of practice. :-P

I also struggle with the edging but find I'm slowly starting to get the hang of it. (A good brush is needed here, I use windsor & newtons series 7, 0 brush )

I live in South Africa so I use the paint range I can get my hands on. I also find PP white to be nicer to the airbrush compared to Vallejo white, and use Airbrush medium to thin all my paints down when using the Airbrush and water when using brush.

Jaeger be careful of the vallejo reds, if they are model colour or game colour a lot of the colours contain cadmium and are best not sprayed for health reasons. It says on the label in tiny letter (either "does not contain cd pb etc etc" or "contains cadmium do not spray")

If you struggle to get all the vallejo ranges where you are the model colour "flat red" is safe a gives a lovely deep scarlet colour. I've used it as base for nomads.

Tx Surprize will take that in mind, One is meant to wear a filtration mask, when airbrushing which I don't do. I need to get one, which I'll do at the end of the month, December/January has been a long month salary wise :-P

They are not all bad. Off the top of my head the Model Colour ones that DO contain cadmium (it's easier in the original Spanish as lots have the word "cadmium" in the name!) and shouldn't be sprayed are:

Burnt Cadmium Red ( )
Vermillion (Rojo Cadmium Bermillion)
Hull Red
Dark Red
Red (.926)
Scarlet
Orange Red (Rojo Cadmium Claro)
Carmine Red
Black Red (Cadmium Brown)

I've made do by using
Cavalry Brown as a first base colour, then flat red as a main colour and then mixing my own highlight with flat red and sunny skin tone, before a very light and tight application of white as a final highlight. It works out a little darker than Angel's I think (although I'm a little red colour blind so I might be wrong!!) That recipe gives this:

On the subject of Vallejo reds... If you get one of the "air" lines (either Vallejo Model Air or Vallejo Game Air) you will not run into the cadmium issue. Though, some argue you get less paint for your money.

Good ol' Dr. Worm will not be accepted into the campaign. He's quite the elite, even amongst the EI's elite troops. Unidrons, Vanguard, Seed Soldiers are the ideal entry with regards to CA.

If you'd like to submit a REM, the R-Drone (8 pt repeater drone) will be accepted. Ikadrons, as well.

Made a start on mine. Should/can we post WIP photos in this thread?

Not sure who out of the 7 vanguard and anyat I'm entering from my Morats yet, but they are all being painted together at the moment so the WIP pictures are generic. Added a dark grey base coat (vmc dark blue grey), first highlight of vmc neutral grey and second highlightof 50/50 vmc neutral grey & white. All with airbrush. Final hhighlight of white still to go then down to brush work for shading and edge highlights.

Overall pictures are fine. Timestamp would be preferred if you haven't already started. To do so, you can take a picture with your phone on the lockscreen or calendar in the background. Alternatively, a newspaper or other sort of news article with the date on it works.

This also works. I'm much too photography amateurish to know how to extract the date and time info from a jpeg file, though.

I've done some sort of image binary data deciphering, but am nowhere close to being adept or quick at it, let alone doing so when I'm off the clock.

In most cases even without photoshop/gimp/aperture you can see most information if you choose "show file info" or "file properties" in file manager on all OSes

The Model Color range is moving away from the problematic pigments, but it can take some time as they figure proper replacements. So it depends when you bought it and how long it was sitting in the shop. Very old or very new should have no warning, but that means different things (not required vs already managed to change). Bottles from the middle should have the warning if they have toxic pigments.

Or the full safety data from their site, and run scared. Some blacks, whites... any... also listed in the MSDS.

Anyway, you should use a mask, even if just to avoid getting acrylic particles into your lungs.

You should also wear a mask when filing/sanding resin, and especially when spraying polyurethane paints like the Vallejo Surface Primers.

This thread has me motivated to spend some time on my cheerleaders instead of giving them my normal quick paintjob.

Here's my unpainted Fusilier from a few days ago


Base colours added. Quick and dirty highlights as well so there's less work to do with the smaller brush.


Face and some armour detail. Taking pictures at this stage really helped to highlight the mistakes with the eyes so that I could fix them early. I was also struggling a lot with unnatural flesh tones when I was trying to do too much with highlights and shadows. So I was surprised when just a bit of Vallejo brown rose on the cheeks and lips over the base coat of flat flesh gave a pretty decent look.

Those highlights on the blue are rather well done. Good job there! Glad I could give a little motivation.

Bit more progress on my Morats. Finished airbrush highlights on grey armour and have defined the armour plates with ink.



I'm leaning towards the hacker as my entry, but at the moment am just trying to mission the whole army, so at this stage it doesn't really matter.

So you'll be having a monochromatic armor scheme on your Morats? It's a tad rough to tell right now, as there isn't enough contrast on the models, but some of the highlights look a little off to me? Might just be my imagination and could change later down the line when there's more paint on them.

Also, you're welcome to submit more than 1 model, surprize. Feel free to enter the whole lot of Morats. All of your entries will be posted under 1 name during the evaluation month.

Keep up the progress, guys! Just a little over a month until the campaign is over!

Side Note: You seem to be consistently double posting. I've been taking care of the extra posts, but this is something you should look into.

Great! while your submitted pictures are fine, I don't think they're doing justice for your effort. If you don't mind, you can resubmit later with better pictures. I'd recommend using at least a light box and making sure to focus on your models.

So I totally forgot to take WIPs of my second Line Kazak, but here are some WIPs of the third. I changed the camo pattern a bit form the first to the second, but the overall colours are the same.

Primed with white zenithal highlighting:


Face, fur trim, starting to base coat the jacket:

After this I forgot to take more WIPs, but all I did was shade the jacket and pants with Delvan Mud, shade and highlight the flak jacket, paint the gun, and then detailing (holster, knee pads, etc). I will post my finished results when I have time to break out the photo box.

I envy how well you can get those block colors in before the detailing. My own attempts never go so smoothly. I will, however, mention that the eyes (while well done) seem off. Perhaps the irises are too small? Just my two cents. But remember, I'm not the sole judge, everyone will be casting votes!

Thanks for the comments. And you are correct about the eyes being off. However, I lost patience after 7 tries. In most games he'll be holding pom-poms anyways...
