Data-Sphere Painting Campaign Winter ’15

We’ve done it! We’ve gone through a full year of the Data-Sphere Painting Campaign!

Voting ended early on the 1st, with 12 entries and over 100 votes. Trust me, you’ll want to see these entries!

1st Place: Plexus

Winter ’15’s first place position is held by Plexus with a beautiful Asura who seems to have a few fans in her jurisdiction that are a little more graffiti oriented.

  • The first thing that strikes me is the shading. The purples, greens, and blue-greys all really leave an immediate impact on the senses.
  • The highlights, in particular, really make the details pop out and grab the viewer’s attention. The points of light are certainly enthralling.
  • The free-hand work on the Asura is also captivating. The unit logo and the face are prime examples of this.
  • Speaking of free-hand, how about that concrete art? Well done.

2nd Place: Nazroth

In second place we have Nazroth with a converted Grenzer biker on a display base surveying the area ahead.

  • The first thing that stands out to me is the richness of the reds. Red is an infamously difficult color and Nazroth does it well.
  • OSL can be tricky, and Nazroth had some difficulties earlier in the campaign with his OSL effects, but recovered and ended up with a convincing result.
  • Now let’s talk weathering. The steel infrastructure of the wasteland this Nomad is roaming is obviously in a state of disrepair and is convincingly varied and realistic.
  • At the base of this entry is a conversion and diorama that tells a good story while not losing focus from the miniature.

3rd Place: red harvest

Red harvest eeks out a third placement with his PanO Bulleteer REM. Red harvest eschews the airbrush in favor of good ol’ fashioned brush work and some well honed skills.

  • Photography skills were fantastic as red harvest used his famous terrain building skills to provide a convincing backdrop to really showcase the remote.
  • The lights and lenses are at once subtle and impressive. Did you notice the little light bars and points sprinkled on the legs?
  • I found the shading and blending to be well done (seems to be a consistent theme among top placers) and noted the brake lights on the rear of the REM to be a rich blend of yellow and brown that gives a lot of character to such a small detail.

Those are your winners for the Winter ’15 season!

All top placers will be receiving patches to signify their achievements and first place will also be receiving some Vallejo paints as a bit of an extra reward.
