MCStudio’s Kickstarter and Interview with Marc C!
The audiolevels of the video are a bit off. We’re sorry about the inconvenience. We recommend headphones or turning to volume a bit higher (not too high, as one side of the conversation is on a regular audio level).
M4 Collapsible Cardboard Terrain, a new terrain Kickstarter for Infinity and other wargames by Marc C!
Marc C is a well-known poster on the Infinity forums. Some of his best known threads are the ones where he shows off his amazing scratchbuild-with-cardboard skills (there are some amazing designs in there, definitely worth a look!). Here and here are a few examples.
Apparently Marc had so much fun building and crafting these buildings, that he decided to turn it into a business! 😉 His Kickstarter is now live, and shows some of his newest designs for sale. The M4 series.
The M4 series is designed to be fully collapsible, making it easy to store, while the cardboard material keeps it lightweight. The cardboard material also makes these products remarkably sturdy, as shown on the Kickstarter page, where two of the buildings carry a bucketload of heavy books without showing any signs of stress.
All parts are very easy to assemble and disassemble (as shown in the video) and the entire series is very modular. You won’t be playing on the same table twice! The M4 series features buildings, smaller buildings, bridges, walls, containers, ladders, stairs and last but not least; connectors, which allows you to combine the square M4 buildings into L-shaped or T-shaped or whatever letter/shape you can come up with. The designs even allow for full inside accessibility to play your minis.
While the buildings aren’t designed for Infinity per se, the height and size allows you to even hide TAGs behind the buildings, which makes the series amazing for this game.
The M4 series allows you to set up multi-level tables, modular in their design, while still giving you enough space in your storage for other things (like Infinity miniatures!).
Marc mentions in the video some future ideas he’ll be working on to expand the M4 series into even wider range of buildings and designs; balconies, a plus(+!)-shaped building, larger building
The Kickstarter
The Kickstarter is now live (19 days left on the clock), and it’s going well for Marc!
The Kickstarter gives you multiple pledge levels. The first ones give you a couple of buildings or sets of containers. After that you get sets of the M4 series, each level roughly duplicating the first one in the line, building up to a set to fill a 4×4′ table. A 4×4′ table that can be stored in a bankers box.
Unfortunately for our European and Australian readers, the M4 Kickstarter is USA and Canada only at the moment. This has been done because Canadian (where Marc is from) post- and tax-rates aren’t friendly for small businesses to ship overseas. This makes it rough for the M4 Kickstarter to ship to Europe and Australia, eventually leading Marc to the conclusion this wasn’t the best option right now.
He hopes to be able to gather European and Australian customers when his company has grown a bit more.
This Kickstarter is a career switch for Marc, who has been working in the graphic designs business until recently. Now he wants to commit himself full-time to this project. This means the Kickstarter won’t have add-ons, allowing Marc to ensure his backers will get their products and rewards as quickly as possible, and allowing Marc to keep the shipping rates in control.
Definitely sounds like a well rounded, well thought-out Kickstarter. We like that! 😀
Also, we must not forget to mention, MCStudio will have their own website up soon, and they will post some tips and tricks about working with cardboard there in the near-future. Apparently the material doesn’t work well with masking tapes people normally use for painting straight lines. Keep that in mind!
Marc and MCStudio, we wish you all the best with the Kickstarter and we hope you’ll be able to sell to European and Australian fans in the near future! Your threads on our forum show there are many in those areas waiting to buy these awesome products! 😉
We’re looking forward to your video Battle Report Marc mentions in the video, and we’ll be sure to link it here and in our channels as well!
Thank you once again Claudius for the interview. I didn’t have time to make the video during the tournament. I’ll make a video very soon and post it on my KS page.
Not a problem! Thanks for doing the interview with me! Sorry for the sound levels! I’m still working on these things to try and fix them.
The video is now on the KS page. 😉
It is a great idea and as such should be supported 🙂
I started getting decals from a local print company for these and have built some sweet sets. I wish they would get an online designer for scratchbuilds. I think you can call them and order any custom stuff:
